In this Change Through Pain podcast episode, I share five easy steps to give a proper apology and why this is vital to the success of your relationships. It’s easy to say you are sorry, but not mean it, and continue the same behavior.
An apology without changed behavior is as good as getting your tires rotated without removing your tires.
A sincere heartfelt apology involves five important steps which are often overlooked by the person apologizing.
The recipient often accepts a simple “I’m sorry” and expects the hurtful words or actions to not happen again.
While in reality, the lesson is often times not learned, because they do not understand how their actions hurt your feelings.
They also did not acknowledge the hurtful actions and how you were made to feel.
This is a perfect opportunity to teach others by communicating exactly what they said or did to hurt you and how it made you feel.
Your feelings are important and your boundaries are necessary to protect your peace. Don’t miss the opportunity to teach someone how to treat you.
What you accept will result in how you are treated. You have the right to walk away if you feel disrespected after sharing your feelings and setting boundaries.
When you are coming from a place of love, those who want to be a part of your life will respect your wishes.
Five easy steps to apologize:
1) Admit you were wrong by dropping the ego.
2) Be empathetic when listening to the person you hurt.
3) Acknowledge what you said and how it was hurtful.
4) Admit what you will do differently.
5) Change your behavior.
Don’t allow ego to keep you from apologizing to someone important in your life. There are no do overs and we are not promised tomorrow.
